Explosions hit Russian-occupied city for 2nd time in 4 days, says Ukraine

A series of large explosions rocked the city of Nova Kakhovka, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, on Monday night. The city, like much of Kherson, is under Russian occupation.

It is the second major explosion in four days in the city, site of a major hydroelectric dam and a link to Crimea’s water supply via the North Crimean canal.

A video posted on social media showed explosions and a huge fireball lighting up the sky.

Serhiy Khlan, a Ukrainian official who is a member of the Kherson regional council, said on Facebook:
“In Nova Kakhovka minus a Russian ammunition depot. They brought it, they brought it, they stocked it, they stocked it and now they have fireworks at night.”

Khlan, who is not in the Kherson region, warned New Kakhovka residents not to venture outdoors.

“Please take care and do not approach the detonation site,” he said.

Russian state news agency TASS did not refer to an ammunition dump exploding, but on Wednesday reported: “Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the Kakhovka hydropower plant in the Kherson region, a source said.”

The deputy head of the Russian-backed civil-military administration in Kherson, Kirill Stremousov, said the Ukrainian missiles did not hit the hydroelectric plant.

TASS later said the potassium nitrate warehouses had exploded. Potassium nitrate is a highly combustible substance used as an ingredient in fertilizers and was the cause of the Beirut explosion two years ago.

THE CNN cannot confirm the cause of the explosions or what was destroyed. TASS reported: “There are casualties, the market, hospital and houses have been damaged,” citing the Russian-backed civil-military administration in Kherson.

Ukrainian forces have intensified attacks using missiles and long-range artillery against Russian command posts and ammunition sites in the past week.
