An American man convicted of the 2004 murder of an elderly couple was executed Thursday night in Alabama. Jamie Ray Mills, 50, was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m. local time after being administered a lethal injection, according to the Alabama Corrections Department. He was convicted in 2007 of murdering 87-year-old Floyd Hill and his 72-year-old wife Vera Hill during an armed robbery. His wife Joanne Mills, who testified against him at trial, is serving a life sentence for the same case. This is the second execution since the beginning of the year in Alabama and the sixth in the US. The previous execution in Alabama and the first for 2024 in the US was that of Kenneth Eugene Smith by nitrogen inhalation, a method used for the first time worldwide, with the UN denouncing this method of execution as a form of “torture”.
