The UN Food Program said on Monday (15) it had brought food to around 1.4 million people in Gaza since the start of the war on October 7, but many others needed help.
“Everyone in Gaza is hungry,” said Samer Abdeljaber, director of the region’s Food Program, adding that “we need a lasting ceasefire to stop the suffering.”
Images taken by the UN-linked agency show meals being prepared and distributed to displaced families in Rafah and people queuing for bread at a bakery being supported by the Food Program to restart operations.
A UN-certified report in December said all 2.3 million Gazans face severe levels of hunger and the proportion of the population facing acute food insecurity has risen to the highest level ever recorded globally.
Inside Gaza, famine is not spread evenly. Almost all aid reaching the enclave passes through Rafah, on the border with Egypt, and aid agencies have cited problems distributing supplies.
