The European Parliament passed a resolution this Thursday (7) that calls for the right to abortion to be included in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (EU). There were 324 votes in favour, 155 against and 38 abstentions.
The proposal will be submitted to the European Council, and aims to amend Article 7 of the Charter, adding that “everyone has the right to safe and legal abortion”.
The text also calls on member states of the bloc to remove obstacles to safe abortion and ensure access to the service, antenatal care and maternal services and supplies.
Parliament also notes that the bans “disproportionately affect women in poverty”, in particular those belonging to minority groups.
The decision comes after the United States Supreme Court struck down the “Roe v Wade” law, which had guaranteed legal termination of pregnancy across the country for decades.
MEPs condemned “strongly once again the setback in women’s rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights in the US and some EU Member States”.
They also expressed solidarity and support for women in the United States and those who perform and advocate for abortion.
Finally, lawmakers recommended that a delegation be sent to the US to assess the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision and support social movements in the country.
