A meeting of the Conference of Presidents was convened by the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola to discuss the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
An exchange of views also took place with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen.
The Conference of Presidents condemned in the strongest possible terms Russia’s attack on Ukraine. “Ukraine is an independent and sovereign state and its territorial integrity is non-negotiable. The invasion is unjustified and illegal and a threat to the stability of Europe and the region, as well as to international law and order. our societies and can not be left without an answer.
We remain firmly united, determined and ready to respond to the unprovoked Russian attack. The European Parliament is in favor of an unprecedented European and international response, including new and tougher sanctions that will ensure that the Kremlin is held accountable.
“The Conference of Presidents expresses its full solidarity and support for Ukraine and its people,” the European Parliament said in a statement.
It was agreed to hold a relevant debate in an extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.
