European elections in Spain: The right prevails – A blow for Prime Minister Sanchez’s Socialists

Spain’s right-wing prevailed yesterday Sunday 9/6 in the European elections of the Socialist Party (PSOE) of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, while the process was marked by the spectacular debut of a new far-right faction. According to the official results, the People’s Party (PP), the official opposition, received about 34% of the vote and will send 22 MEPs to Brussels, while the Socialists were limited to 30% of the vote and will occupy 20 seats in the European Parliament. In 2019, in the previous European elections, the PSOE (21 seats) won clearly over the PP (13 seats). The far-right party Vox improved its performance in 2019 and will take six seats from four five years ago, after receiving 9.62%, compared to 6.21%.
