Europe faces worrying increase in dengue cases, authorities warn

Health authorities in Europe are on alert with the significant increase in dengue cases on the continent.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the so-called “imported cases” of the disease, when the infection is registered in someone who traveled abroad, more than tripled from 2022 to 2023.

Based on numbers from the first months of 2024, the expectation is that dengue cases will increase even further.

Furthermore, local cases, that is, people who did not travel or had no contact with travelers from abroad, almost doubled.

In 2023, there were 130 locally acquired dengue cases reported in the European Union, up from 71 cases reported in 2022.

Before that, between 2010 and 2021, the total number of locally acquired cases was 73.

According to ECDC, Aedes albopictus, another mosquito that transmits dengue fever, is spreading further north, east and west in Europe and now has self-sustaining populations in 13 countries in the bloc.

Health authorities point out that large-scale tourist events, such as the Paris Olympic Games, scheduled for next month, could contribute to an increase in outbreaks of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.

Climate change and global warming are also factors that may favor the proliferation of dengue vector insects in European countries.

Dengue outbreaks also broke records this year in South and North America, highlighting a worrying global trend in relation to the disease.
