The other leaders, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and French President Emmanuel Macron, applauded him when they appeared together at a news conference shortly after Croatia advanced to the semi-finals World Cup, eliminating Brazil on penalties. All of them had something to say: Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa congratulated him although “every time Brazil loses, Portugal feels a sadness». Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed the result stating that “European strategic autonomy in football seems to be already being confirmed”.
French President Macron took advantage of a break between two meetings to attend the match as well, accompanying Plenkovic.
