A matter of days is the conclusion of the European Union vaccine supply agreement, which provides for the purchase of 1.8 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech, said today the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
“We are working with Biontech / Pfizer on a new contract,” the commission chairwoman told a news conference.
“This will provide 1.8 billion installments for the period 2021-2023. We will close it in the coming days. “It will provide the necessary doses for the administration of boosting doses that will increase immunity”, said the president of Commission.
Earlier, a European official told Reuters that the Union had entered into a 1.8 billion tranche agreement with Pfizer-BioNTech, the largest such contract in the world.
The deal is enough to cover the European Union’s population of 450 million for the next two years, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.
It is the third contract agreed between the Union and the two companies, which have already agreed to supply 600 million installments this year under the two previous contracts.
