EU imposes embargo on Russian oil with immediate effect on two-thirds of imports

The 27 member states of the European Union (EU) have reached an agreement to ban Russian oil exports to the bloc, European Council President Charles Michel said on Monday (30).

“This immediately covers more than two-thirds of Russia’s oil imports, cutting off an immense source of funding for its war machine,” the European leader wrote on social media.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, praised the agreement made. “This will effectively cut about 90% of Russian oil imports into the EU by the end of this year,” she said.

Among other measures in the new sanctions package will be the withdrawal of one of Russia’s largest banks, Sberbank, from the Swift international payment system, the banning of three more Russian state broadcasters and sanctions on individuals held responsible for war crimes in Ukraine.
