EU: Emergency meeting of Foreign Ministers in New York to impose sanctions on Russia after Putin’s speech on conscription

Its foreign ministers The European Union will meet in New York on Thursday (22/9) in order to decide on a new package of sanctions on Russiasince o Putin announced partial conscription for war in Ukraine.

The Russian president’s threat to use nuclear weapons is “unacceptable”, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

At the same time, he denounced a “new escalation” on the part of Russia. “The international community must react,” he added.

“I expect (ministers) to discuss how we can continue our military support to Ukraine, how we can continue to put pressure on Russia. The issue of sanctions will undoubtedly be on the table,” Borrell continued, noting that he would begin making proposals on the matter.

In an interview given to the American television network CNN, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, estimated earlier that Putin’s statements require “new sanctions on our part”.

The EU has already adopted six sets of economic sanctions against Russia, but Hungary has said it is against imposing new measures. In order to impose sanctions, the unanimity of the member countries is required.
