EU Digital Markets Law May Limit Big Techs and Protect Users

The member states of the European Union reached an agreement on the Digital Markets Act, which will comprise a series of measures to limit the power of so-called Big Techs, protect users and democratize access to the technology market on the continent.

The opening of the application store market, the exchange of information about data between messaging applications, the democratization of the offer of standard browsers, online searches and digital payment tools are some of the topics that the new legislation must regulate.

The measure still needs to go through a vote in the European Parliament and the EU Council, but is already scheduled to come into force by 2023. The potential impact of these new rules on the technology market and how Big Techs will be affected are discussed in this article. episode of E Tem Mais by José Milagre, a lawyer specializing in digital law and director of Cyberexperts, a digital expertise and data protection company, and Maria Avis, a digital marketing specialist associated with Meta and professor at Uninter.
