EU: Common measures to reduce gas demand ’27’

LAST UPDATE: 11.00

The energy ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union will discuss on Monday methods of reducing demand for natural gas, as the bloc faces declining Russian flows and prepares for new shocks in the field of supply.

“I plan to present to the ministers concrete steps that I believe we need to take, both on the part of the Member States and on the part of the European Commission,” said EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson as she arrived at the ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.

The Commission will present the EU plan to coordinate the preparation of the 27 for possible gas supply shocks in July.

Russia has chosen the tactic of blackmail and the EU must be ready for any scenario, said Energy Commissioner Kadri Simpson as she approached the Council of Ministers in Luxembourg.

“We know the situation is serious, the crisis can get worse,” she said.

“At the moment, supplies from Russia are halfway through the same period last year and flows could be further reduced. We need to speed up our response to Russian actions,” she said.

Country Simmons also said that the Commission’s proposal will be ready by July, while she also spoke about the common gas market platform, noting that in this way better prices can be negotiated.
