Climate Minister Kristen Michal was today appointed the new Prime Minister of Estonia by President Alar Karis and was instructed to form a government, the presidency’s office announced today. Yesterday Kaya Kalas submitted her resignation as Prime Minister of the country to take up duties as the head of European diplomacy. “Given the current balance of power in national politics, the coalition of the Reform Party, the Social Democrats and Estonia 200 has the best chance of forming a decisive government,” President Karis said in his statement. Kalas led her liberal Reform party to electoral victories in 2019 and 2023 and has been head of government since 2021. She will remain Estonia’s caretaker prime minister until a new government is approved by early August. Kala’s party will elect a new leader on September 8. Source: RES
