Estonia blocks student visas for Russians

Estonia announced today that it will prevent Russian nationals from obtaining temporary residence permits or study visas in Estonia.

“Maintaining sanctions against Russia is necessary to ensure relentless pressure on that country,” Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said in a statement.

“If the sanctions help end Russian aggression, it will have a positive effect on our own security,” he added.

The Estonian government also said that short-term employment of Russian and Belarusian citizens with legal residence permits issued by another EU member state will no longer be allowed.

Reinsalu stressed that the additional measure is intended to ensure that Russian and Belarusian citizens could not circumvent the sanctions by obtaining a short-term visa for another country.

Belarus, a Kremlin ally, facilitated Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by allowing Russian troops to attack from its soil.
