Espresso coffee, Italian heritage: 12 things to know

The coffee it is not simply a drink: it is a ritual, an opportunity to take a break, a sign of friendship that unites people. In a word: an art, all Italian. It was us – in the 19th century, in Naples – who invented a new way of drinking coffee, which before was only an infusion, with the “Coccumella.”»: The first modern coffee maker with filter. And always us, at the beginning of the 20th century, we invented the first espresso machine, the legendary Bezzera: a revolution, which has brought the culture of the cup around the world, also revolutionizing the way of living by making espresso, a fixed stop in the days of millions of people. This is why coffee, and Italian espresso in particular, deserves credit: this is where the proposal for nominate it for Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage.

THE COFFEE COMMUNITY
He launched it on Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee, made up of companies and organizations in the coffee sector, which for this reason created the Community of the Rite of Espresso Coffee. A virtual community to which everyone can join to sign (in one click, on www.ritodelcaffe.it) for the candidacy of the Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee you can formalize and then start the verification process by UNESCO, but also to tell – with photos, written stories, drawings and poems – their experiences related to coffee, which will then be collected in an ebook.

“This Community was created to bring together the operators and artisans of the production chain, consumers and all citizens who in Italy and abroad practice the ritual of Italian espresso coffee every day, ”he says Luigi Morello, President of the Coffee Protection Consortium. «We wanted to bring together all the regional coffee communities, uniting the whole country. Each of these has its peculiarities and its consumption habits but all share the same values: iexclusivity, culture, sociability, history and traditions.
