ESET: “Russia leads in the number of cryptocurrency-related crimes”

According to information security company ESET, the number of threats related to cryptocurrencies has recently decreased by a quarter. However, the trend did not affect Russia.

According to the ESET report, at the moment, every tenth case of attacks on cryptocurrency users occurred in Russia. Also, Peru (6.8%) and the USA (5.3%) are in the top three in this indicator.

“The total number of threats associated with cryptocurrencies decreased by 23.6% from May to August 2021. This is due to the fall in the cryptocurrency market. At the same time, there is a noticeable increase in the interest of cybercriminals in users of digital assets in Russia, ”analysts write.

Despite the overall decline in the number of threats, fraudulent investment schemes have become even more popular. Cybercriminals often lure users in by pretending to be celebrities or even government departments.

The popularity of miner viruses has indeed declined over the reporting period. The number of cases of detections of such malicious programs fell by 24.6%. At the same time, 49.5% of all threats related to cryptocurrencies are accounted for by a virus called Win / CoinMiner.

“The number of cases of detecting such miners depends on the asset price – the higher the price, the more attractive it is for hackers to launch malware. But for scammers and extortionists, prices on the market do not matter – in any case, criminal actions are extremely beneficial to them, ”said Jiří Kropáč, head of the ESET threat detection laboratory.

Earlier, Chainalysis reported that payouts to ransomware hackers are growing steadily, and 2021 could easily surpass 2020.
