The legislative year officially began this Wednesday (2), with the opening ceremony of work at the National Congress. THE CNN Specialist Erika Bechara spoke about the importance of an environmental agenda in 2022.
Bechara listed a series of “environmental threats that do not stop growing”, such as, for example, “climate change, environmental disasters, superlative deforestation, forest fires”, among others.
To the CNN Specialist, “it is not possible to contain these threats without laws that control polluting activities, prevent the unsustainable use of natural resources and punish aggressions to the environment”.
Bechara understands that “the Legislature is active, but not to improve environmental legislation”. “There are a series of proposals that represent a real setback in the achievements already obtained, as is the case of the General Environmental Licensing Law, which loosens the licensing of polluting activities”, he said.
The Legislature has a huge responsibility to advance positive environmental agendas and stop the setbacks agenda.

However, the expert recognizes that “we also have some bills that should be promoted, as they favor environmental protection, including the PEC that establishes climate security as a fundamental right”.
Bechara concluded by saying that “we should not think that strict environmental laws will compromise economic activities”. “The foreign market threatens to close itself off to Brazilian products if there is no environmental control of the production chain,” he said.
