Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan today stressed to Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson that Ankara expects concrete steps in terms of its concerns about terrorist organizations, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported, according to Reuters.
In a telephone conversation, Erdogan also said that the arms embargo imposed on Turkey after its invasion of Syria in 2019 should be lifted, according to Anadolu.
Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO on Wednesday, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.
Turkey surprised NATO allies last week by reacting to the two countries’ accession, but Western leaders expressed confidence that Ankara’s objections would not stand in the way of NATO membership.
Ankara says Sweden and Finland are hosting individuals linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and supporters of Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of orchestrating the 2016 coup attempt.
