Erdogan: Netanyahu has already gone down in history as the butcher of Gaza

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally responsible for the deaths of people in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu, who committed one of the greatest atrocities of the last century, has already gone down in history as the butcher of GazaErdogan said while addressing his ruling party’s lawmakers in the parliament in Ankara.

This “stigma” is not only borne by Netanyahu, but also by those who supported him “unconditionally”, added the Turkish leader.

As the Turkish president said, the Israeli government’s statements do not indicate that the current ceasefire will lead to a lasting truce.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Netanyahu reiterated his government’s goal to destroy Hamas’ leadership and military capabilities when the ceasefire ends.

Statements coming from the Netanyahu government are limiting our hopes that the humanitarian pause will turn into a lasting truce, Erdogan said without elaborating, reiterating his view that genocide is being committed in Gaza.

The Turkish president however welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and the exchange of Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners, which Hamas agreed with Israel, describing it as a temporary “cease of bloodshed” in the enclave.

Turkey, which supports a two-state solution to the conflict, has been sharply critical of Israel for its ground and air assault on Gaza, which it launched in retaliation for last month’s attack by Hamas, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 240 others were taken hostage.

More than 15,000 people, mostly women and children, have so far been killed by Israeli retaliation, health officials in the enclave say.

We consider the exchange of hostages for prisoners, the humanitarian pause, a positive development in the sense that the bloodshed stopsErdogan said.

He said he would discuss the situation in Gaza during his visit to Dubai later in the week, adding that Ankara would step up diplomatic efforts for a full ceasefire and hostage swaps in the coming days.

Unlike most of its Western alliesTurkey, a NATO member country, does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Erdogan added that Turkey has “largely completed” the removal of its nationals from Gaza.
