NATO members are lobbying for Turkey to give the green light to Sweden’s accession, at the Vilnius Synod on July 11 and 12. But Ankara has yet to lift the veto, which is becoming even less likely as extreme anti-Muslim protests continue in Sweden.
Foreign ministers, security advisers and the heads of the countries’ secret services will take part in the Summit. NATO and Western officials in general insist that Sweden meets all the criteria for membershipwhile Ankara claims that more needs to be done, especially with regard to Kurdish organizations.
Earlier this year, Turkey withdrew its objections to Finland, which joined NATO in April.
