Environmental crime: couple arrested with “Amazon Turtles”

A couple was arrested for environmental crime in Fonte Boa, Amazonas, this Monday (5). The Civil Police of Amazonas arrested the couple after finding 26 turtles of the Amazon turtle species . Wandrey Lourenço Barbosa, 33, investigated for drug trafficking in the city.

According to delegate Bruno Rafael Nunes, from the 70th Interactive Police Station (DIP) in Juruá (674 kilometers from Manaus), the investigations began after the police team from the 55th DIP in Fonte Boa requested support to comply Wandrey’s preventive detention . The action had the support of the Amazonas Military Police (PMAM) and the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM).

“According to investigations by the 55th DIP, the man has a lot of influence in drug trafficking in Fonte Boa. He and his partner were living in Juruá and, in their house, we found 26 turtles of the Amazon Turtle species,” said the delegate.

According to the delegate, Wandrey and his partner, Nelsa da Silva, 28 years old, were arrested for environmental crime . The man must answer for drug trafficking and environmental crime and the woman only for environmental crime. Both are at the disposal of the Justice.

The turtles were released into the river after the seizure . The species belongs to the Podocnemididae family, found in the Amazon River and its tributaries. The reptile can reach almost a meter in length and is part of the indigenous tradition of the region.

The animal is also known as “jurará-açu”, which comes from the old Tupi dialect, in which “jurará” is derived from “iurará”, which means turtle or chelonian; and the term “açu”, considered an adjective for something large, originating the name “jurará-açu” or “cagado grande”.

The origin of this name is still refers to the goddess of Tupi-Guarani mythology Juraráaçu, who was transformed into a turtle by Tupã, as punishment for having freed Anhangá from prison, according to the Amazonas Commercial Association (ACA).
