Energy demand in the EU falls 3.5% in 2022, with prices rising, says agency

Demand for energy in the European Union (EU) fell by 3.5% in 2022, amid rising prices and bottlenecks in the supply chain as a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The analysis is by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and appears in a report released this Wednesday (8).

According to the IEA, the mild temperature during the European winter also contributed to the drop in electricity consumption in the industrial sector.

In the agency’s analysis, the demand and supply of electricity around the world are becoming increasingly dependent on the climate, which leads the IEA to argue in favor of accelerating decarbonization and the transition to clean energy in the world, highlighting the last year’s unusual weather conditions, including drought in Europe and heat waves in China and India.

Due to this greater dependence on climatic factors, the IEA says it is crucial to increase the flexibility of energy systems around the world, ensuring greater supply and grid resilience.
