On the official Fortnite website for China, quite unpleasant news for local gamers appeared – almost four years after the release, the regional version of the game is being closed. Accordingly, players who prefer the Epic Games product, starting today, November 1, will no longer be able to download the battle royale client or register a new account, and after two weeks, on November 15, the publisher promised to completely shut down their servers for this region. It is worth saying that similar information has already appeared from insiders, but now it has been officially confirmed.
Unfortunately, the publisher itself, represented by Epic Games, does not comment on the closure of servers and, in fact, leaving the huge video game market in the Middle Kingdom. Experts believe that there are two reasons for this at once – the first is connected with the rather active development of competitors in the face of PUBG, Free Fire and many clone games that copy the mechanics of Fortnite. These projects are in incredible demand in China, while Fortnite itself has sagged a lot online. The second reason is related to the recently introduced restrictions on the duration of play sessions for children – the number of available hours was greatly reduced, which significantly influenced the project’s performance.
It’s also worth recalling that Fortnite for the world and Fortnite for China are two completely different games. In the spring of 2018, when the battle royale was launched in the Celestial Empire, due to the peculiarities of the local legislative framework, the publisher had to literally reshape their game. For example, in the Chinese version of the project there were no microtransactions, and the battle pass was not sold – it was given to each player for free. Probably, the lack of an opportunity to somehow make money on such a well-known project also influenced the decision to turn off the servers.
