After weeks of feverish speculation, the nominations for the Emmy Awards 2024 have been revealed. As we expected, the FX epic Shogun leads the way with 25 nominations for its inaugural season. Most of the Japanese drama’s stars were selected, including lead character Hiroyuki Sanada and actress Anna Sawai.
Shogun is closely followed by her network partner The Beara comedy series (despite controversy over its inclusion in the genre) that has earned 23 nominations for its second season. The series is coming off a win at the most recent Emmy Awards ceremony, which took place in January after being postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike last fall. Some have speculated that a softer reception for the third season of The Bear could have influenced the number of nominations for the second; these fears, it seems, have not come true, although it will be interesting to see if the series falls from its position when next year’s nominations are announced.
After Shogun And The Bear, leading the nominations is Only Murders in the Buildinga more traditional sitcom that earned 21 nominations for its star-studded final season, including nominations for all three of its lead actors (Steve Martin, Martin Short and, for the first time, Selena Gomez) and big-name additions for season three Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep. The Emmy haul for Only Murders has another interesting feature: the songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul were nominated once again for original music and lyrics, for co-writing with theater veterans Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman the song Which Of The Pickwick Triplets Did It?. If they win, Pasek and Paul will join the “EGOT club,” which includes entertainment stars who have won all four of the industry’s top awards: Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. The two have already won both a Tony and an Oscar in 2017.
Fourth in terms of number of nominations is True Detective: Night Countrywhich earned 19 nominations, making it the most nominated project in the Emmys’ limited or anthology series category.
The full list of Emmy nominees features several disappointments and surprises, including a surprisingly strong showing for The Morning Show, Apple TV+ hit that seems to have conquered the Television Academy, earning the same number of nominations as the series Hacks HBO’s most critically acclaimed series. Another stellar HBO project, The Curse – starring Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone, recently named a two-time Oscar winner for Best Actress – was completely ignored by the Television Academy, not even getting a nomination. The Emmys have also given a fair amount of attention to Apple’s series Palm Royale And Chemistry lessonswhich received a milder reception from critics when they debuted this season.
