On June 22 it will be forty years since the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi. January 14 would have been his 55th birthday. His family organized, like every year, a sit-in a few steps from the Vatican, in Largo Giovanni XXIII, which just recently announced the opening of an investigation into the case. Emanuela Orlandi, a Vatican citizen, disappeared on June 22, 1983 when she was 15 years old: she left home to go to music lessons and she never came back. From the Banda della Magliana to Alì Agca, from the testimony of her friend on the harassment to the possible connection with the disappearance of Mirella Gregori, there are dozens of leads opened over the years and never reached the truth.
Emanuela’s brother Pietro spoke about the investigation at the traditional sit-it and asked for seriousness. «For a serious investigation, which is not propaganda, one must listen to a series of people who may have come into direct contact with this story starting fromthe former secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and the former secretary of the Pope Emeritus, Monsignor Georg Gänswein». Monsignor Gänswein himself wrote in the book that has just come out that he has never compiled a dossier on the case, while Pietro Orlandi says that an Emanuela dossier exists, “Fr Georg himself confirmed it to me”.
The request is that of maximum collaboration between the Italian state and the Vatican. “Are we getting any closer to the truth? There were times when I banged my head against the wall because no one listened to me. Now I see that there is important attention from the Vatican State because in turn there has been attention from the Italian State. Perhaps we have come to understand that it is not just the disappearance of a girl, which is already serious, but everything that surrounds this disappearance. There is a lot to understand, the Italian State must open an investigation, in my opinion, also for the role that the apparatuses have played: not always clear. I’m talking about SISDE and SISMI».
The family has had a list of people to listen to since 2018. Pietro Orlandi would like Whatsapp messages in his possession to be acquired by the Vatican prosecutor: «In those exchanges between two collaborators of Pope Francis dating back to 2014, we speak of Emanuela, of documents on Emanuela, they talk about it as a serious fact, to be resolved, grave robbers and ground penetrating radars are called into question and one also wonders how the money can be found to support the expenses ».
According to the lawyer of the Orlandi family, Laura Sgrò: “Everyone deserves the truth: the Orlandi family, the mother, Pietro, Natalina, the grandchildren, this country. And the Church deserves justice too. I ask the Pope to have courage: even if it takes effort. Holy Father, I make an appeal to you: receive me because I believe you are the law. You be justice”.\
