Elon Musk predicts that artificial intelligence will make all jobs obsolete

In a conversation with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the eve of a summit on technology regulation, Tesla billionaire Elon Musk reflected on the need for a “referee” to oversee the supercomputers of the future.

“There will come a point when no jobs will be needed; you can have a job if you want, for personal satisfaction. Artificial intelligence is capable of doing everything. I don’t know if that makes people comfortable or uneasy. Whether it is positive or negative. One of the challenges of the future will be: how do we find purpose in life?”, asked Musk.

The technology mogul went on to say that he envisions an “age of abundance.” “We will not have a basic income; we will have a high universal income.”

Musk admitted his own temptation to delegate part of his duties to AI.

“I often find myself in a position of disbelief. A lot of times when I’m in the fight at 3 a.m. I think, ‘Why am I doing this, can I just wait for the AI to take over?’”

The prime minister, however, pointed out: “I am someone who believes that work gives you meaning in life.”

Closing the conversation, Musk praised Sunak’s plans to monitor and potentially regulate AI, saying that while the ideas are “irritating”, the world of technology needs an “arbiter”.
