The sale of electric and hybrid vehicles increased by 147% in February this year compared to the same period in 2021. According to the Brazilian Electric Vehicles Association, in all there were 3,435 license plates and the best month of February in the historical series of institution.
The number of sales is equivalent to 2.8% of total domestic sales of automobiles and light commercial vehicles in Brazil, which were 120,192, according to Fenabrave (National Federation of Automotive Vehicle Distribution). This evolution indicates that electrified products are gradually gaining more share in the total domestic market.
The president of the Electric Cars Association (ABVE), Adalberto Maluf, explains that the increase in fuel is one of the factors that generate greater demand for electric and hybrid vehicles in Brazil.
“The association expects growth in the electric and hybrid vehicle sector in Brazil, as has been happening in the rest of the world. Last year, global markets more than doubled in sales of electric vehicles with the rise of fossil fuels, with difficulties in supply chains forcing automakers to produce more expensive vehicles with more technologies. We already expected this growth in the sector, February was the best growth, the best in the series history, just like January and December had already been”, he says.
Despite being the third consecutive month of record sales of these vehicles, the president points out that incentives for electromobility are fundamental for this growth.
“We think that Brazil still has a lot of room to grow, reaching 50,000 vehicles sold in the Brazilian market. But that depends on the continuation of some public policies. Unfortunately, Brazil does not have a national plan for electromobility and there are not many incentives for the industrialization of hybrid and electric vehicles, so the sector will almost reach the limit in terms of growth if public policies are not created along with the policies industries”, he points out.
The light electrified fleet in Brazil already exceeds 82,000 vehicles, and is expected to surpass the 100,000 mark at the beginning of the second half of the year.
