The ruling Socialist Party appears to be winning parliamentary elections in Portugal and could even secure autonomy, according to three exit polls, sparking celebrations at Prime Minister Antonio Costa’s main polling station.
In particular, based on exit polls, Costa’s ruling party has 37% -42.5% of the vote, according to Reuters.
The main opposition party, the Social Democrats, has 26.7-35%, followed by the far-right Chega with 4.5-8.5% and the Liberal Initiative with a similar percentage, according to exit polls from the three main TV channels. country channels SIC, RTP and TVI.
The result, boosted by the higher-than-expected voter turnout, came as a surprise as the Socialists had the majority of the lead in recent polls.
In any case, the predominance of the Socialists could signal the arrival, in case of autonomy, of a stable government in the country.
It is noted that Costa, who came to power in 2015 in the aftermath of the debt crisis of 2011-2015, during his tenure led the country to a period of stable economic recovery that helped reduce the budget deficit, with the country recording even a small surplus in 2019, before the pandemic “hit”.
If the Socialists do not secure autonomy but approach the 116-seat threshold, Costa could seek to form a coalition with the two small, eco-oriented PAN and Livre parties.
