The chancellor Merkel did not take part in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) federal bureau decisive vote on the issue of the chancellor candidate in the upcoming national elections, although it was connected to the meeting online and had the right to vote, Spiegel reports.
The president of the CDU Armin Lassett was nominated as chancellor on Monday afternoon with 31 votes in favor and 9 against, while 6 members of the presidency abstained. The total number of voters, however, is 46, while the members of the presidency with the right to vote are 47. The missing vote belongs to Chancellor Merkel, as Spiegel writes.
Just before party leader Armin Lasset and Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) leader Markus Zeder officially announced their decision on April 11 to be joint candidates for chancellor of the two sister parties, Christian Democrat vice-president with the information of “Spiegel”, from the chancellor to express her support to Lasset. Merkel denied this and later publicly stated that she wanted to remain neutral on the issue.
