After the rains that hit the city of Betim, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, on the afternoon of this Wednesday (30), the Minas Gerais Fire Department (CBMMG) was called, around 4 pm, to help an elderly man, 62 years old, who was reportedly swept away by the flood.
According to firefighters, he ended up being carried away by the force of the water until he stopped below a trench, where he was able to cling to the bars of a rainwater drainage channel.
In addition to the elderly man, a motorcyclist ended up being swept away by the same flood. The military explained that with the heavy rain the rainwater collection gallery could not handle the sudden increase in the volume of water and flooded the road.
The flood then dragged the two towards the canal, on the other side of the gallery that flows into the Betim River.
When the firefighters arrived, the Military Police reported that the motorcyclist had been supported by the protection railing at the site and the elderly man grabbed the containment screen. The two were rescued by members of the public who were passing by at the time of the incident.
The elderly man was rescued with abrasions on his body, signs of hypothermia and difficulty breathing. He was taken to the Contagem Municipal Hospital.
In Uberlândia, in the Triângulo Mineiro, also this Wednesday (30), due to heavy rain, firefighters were called to help people stranded in vehicles on a city avenue and another group of five people, who were stranded inside an office of a construction company, which was taken by water in Bairro Saraiva, close to City Hall. Everyone was rescued to safety.
