El Salvador’s president refuses to speak at the Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele was forced to withdraw from speaking at the current Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami. This may be due to the fight against criminal gangs.

According to letter Nayib Bukele, the crypto-friendly president, expressed regret that he would not be able to attend an important event dedicated to monetary freedom, decentralization and human ingenuity. The reason for the cancellation of his speech at the conference was unforeseen circumstances in the country, which require his urgent attention as president. Bukele believes that he must support the people of El Salvador in difficult times for them.

The President did not give a specific reason for what happened. However, it is known that now the authorities of El Salvador are fighting one of the most brutal international criminal groups – “Mara Salvatrucha”. On March 27, a state of emergency was declared in El Salvador for a period of 30 days, as in just a few days, “Mara Salvatrucha” took the lives of more than 70 people. Over the past two weeks, local police have managed to arrest more than 6,890 gang members.

Previously, the president “warmed up” his Twitter followers that he would make an important announcement related to bitcoin at the conference. At last year’s Bitcoin 2021 conference, Bukele said that El Salvador would legalize the first cryptocurrency as a means of payment, and he kept his word. Despite the warnings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the state does not refuse to accept bitcoin.

Recall that on April 21, the government of El Salvador planned to organize the World Blockchain Festival, dedicated to cryptocurrencies, blockchain and the metaverse.
