Edy Star, counterculture icon and partner of Raul Seixas, at 87

The cA actor, actor and icon of Queer Edy Star culture died on the morning of Thursday (24), at the age of 87, in a hospital in Sao Paulo. The artist was in serious condition after a domestic accident last week.

Edy had clinical complications that got worse in recent days and, according to his press office, died serenely, painlessly while receiving medical treatment. The causes were respiratory failure, acute renal failure and acute pancreatitis.

The official statement sent to CNN said that the artist’s unfavorable health conditions could not be reversed despite intensive care.

Edy Star was born in Salvador, capital of Bahia, and was a singular figure in Brazilian music. Known for his irreverence, multifaceted talent and artistic courage, he was part of the iconic album “Kavennial British Society presents session of the 10” (1971), along with Raul Seixas, Miriam Batucada and Sérgio Sampaio. The singer left his mark as one of the first Brazilian artists to openly challenge gender and behavior norms on the scene.

Emblematic figure of Brazilian music and theater, the artist had the trajectory celebrated in two important works: a film and a biography that rescue irreverence and artistic contribution over the decades.

At the same time, the artist recorded an exciting album in honor of his friend and partner Raul Seixas – an intimate and affectionate project that now seeks to be made possible through crowdfunding, inviting fans and admirers to support this unique tribute to Brazilian friendship and music.
