Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican embassy in Quito, in the capital of Ecuador, on Friday (5), and arrested the country's former vice president Jorge Glas, who had been living in the embassy since December.
Glas was convicted twice in Ecuador on corruption charges. He served in the government of former left-wing president Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2017.
The president of Mexico, López Obrador, spoke about what happened, called the arrest of the former vice president a flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty and said that he had instructed his foreign minister to suspend diplomatic relations with the Ecuador.
“Alicia Bárcena, our Secretary of Foreign Affairs, has just informed me that the Ecuadorian police forcefully entered our embassy and detained the former vice president of that country,” Obrador wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“This is a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty, which is why I have instructed our foreign minister to issue a statement regarding this authoritarian act, proceed legally and immediately declare the suspension of diplomatic relations with the government of Mexico and Ecuador,” completed.
