A week after the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday (6/2) that struck the Turkeya and t Syriathe death toll on two countries reached 34,179. Tens of thousands are injured, while countless people remain trapped in the wreckage, with hopes of finding survivors fading by the hour.
The stage of rescues in Syria and Turkey is “coming to an end”, with the emphasis now on providing shelter, food, education and psychological support to survivors, the head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said today UN (OCHA) Martin Griffiths.
“What is more impressive here is that even in Aleppo, which has suffered so much for many years, this moment, that moment (…) it was the worst experience that these people have lived through,” Griffiths pointed out.
The UN official also added that the Organization will transfer humanitarian aid from areas controlled by the Syrian government to rebel-held areas in the northwest Syria.
