Back in September at IFA 2020, TCL unveiled new e-book displays that should be an alternative to E Ink. The new technology, called Nxtpaper (from Next Paper), uses reflected light to form a picture so that the user’s eyes do not get tired, while the screen displays a large number of colors.
The TCL Nxtpaper e-book screened at CES 2021 uses an NCVM composite panel. The abbreviation stands for non-conductive vacuum metallization, the screen uses special materials that do not conduct electricity. It is a 10-inch full color screen with a resolution of 1440 x 1080 pixels.
Such a panel does not require backlighting, that is, we do not have blue light that tires the eyes with prolonged use. TCL’s goal was to create a device that could be used all day long.
The NCVM Nxtpaper panel is very thin and energy efficient, with an e-book thickness of 7.4 mm and a weight of only 316 grams. The screen is certified by the German laboratory Rhine and 26 unique patents related to eye protection.
The e-reader is equipped with a Mediatek MT8768E SoC with PowerVR GE8320 GPU. Users have access to 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory, as well as a slot for microSD cards. The 5000mAh battery supports 18W charging. In standby mode, the device holds a charge for up to 400 hours. The operating system is Android 10.
TCL Nxtpaper will go on sale in April for 349 euros.
