“Dune: Part 2 ” promises to be one of the great titles of Warner Bros. for the Oscars 2025 . However, according to Variety, the continuation of Dennis Villeneuve cannot be nominated in the category of Best Trail .
The website informs that the soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer (“Gladiator”) violates the rules of Academy for exceeding the limit of pre-existing music allowed . For this reason, the production cannot be nominated in the best original soundtrack category.
Academy rule dictates that, in sequels and franchises, the soundtrack must not reuse more than 20% of existing themes or songs from previous works in the same series . As Zimmer’s composition for “Dune: 2” reuses a significant portion of the first film’s score, it does not meet the eligibility criteria .
However, the soundtrack may be nominated for other awards, such as the Golden Globe or BAFTA. However, Zimmer will have a chance to be nominated in the category for his work in “Blitz“, a new film with Saoirse Ronan.
“Dune” is based on the literary saga of Frank Herbertconsisting of six books. The first book was adapted for film before, in 1984, by David Lych. See below the comparison of the characters in Villeneuve and Lynch’s adaptation.
