Dua Lipa revealed that she wrote, “by hand”, 97 songs for her new album in a notebook. The singer spoke about the new project, which still has no release date, during an interview on the program Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night (8).
To presenter Jimmy Kimmel, Dua Lipa said that she has always liked writing things by hand, whether to plan her days with to-do lists, or to create new songs. For her third studio album, the singer said she decided to use, for the first time, her own notebook to gather all the songs – which in the end totaled 97.
“I started writing for this album in 2021 and I just wanted to write down my ideas,” she told the host. “I ended up buying a random notebook at a pharmacy. If I had known how important that book would have been, maybe I would have bought a more sophisticated one.”
Inspired, Dua Lipa revealed that there were no less than 97 songs for the new project, all contained in the physical notebook. “It contains all the songs that are on the album”, pointed out the star.
Despite the many songs, the artist said that “around 80 of them” are not up to par. “The moment I write a song, I know if it’s good or not – or if it’s close to being good,” she said.
The name of the album and its release date remain secret from Dua Lipa. In November 2023, the singer released the first single from the work, titled “Houdini”. The second single, “Training Season”, is already scheduled to arrive on February 15th.
In an interview with the magazine Rolling StoneDua revealed that the long-awaited third album is responsible for capturing a period of major changes in her life, such as the end of a relationship and her advances in dating.
Regarding the musical genre, DL3, as fans call it, will be a “psychedelic pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture”. “It's heavily inspired by bands like Primal Scream and Massive Attack, staples for a London girl with a penchant for nighttime strolls around the city,” said the artist.
“This album feels a little more raw,” Dua revealed. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom, of having fun and just letting things happen, whether good or bad. You can't change that. You just have to deal with whatever is going on in your life.”
