Hundreds of cars were stuck in the Sweden and the Denmark this morning due to heavy snowfall linked to the cold wave in the region, local authorities said. At the same time, at Norway many train services were cancelled.
At Swedenaccording to the APE – MEB, army personnel were recruited to assist rescue services in their efforts to free stranded motorists between Orby and Kristianstad in the southern county of Scania. Many vehicles were abandoned as rescue operations were underway, while others managed to turn in the opposite direction after rescuers pierced the metal bars separating the southbound and northbound traffic lanes, the TT news agency reported, citing rescue crews.
By around 10:30 a.m. local time, all motorists were off the road except the truck drivers, emergency services on the scene said. “About 100 people they are at the gathering point opened by the municipality of Orbi”, where the temperature reached them -5 degrees Celsius around 5:00 a.m., police in the southern region said on their website.
During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, food was provided to the trapped and medicine in some cases where it was neededas added.
The previous day, nearly 1,000 vehicles were trapped by snow on this road, which must remain closed to traffic until tomorrow, Friday morning, the Swedish Transport Administration said. The police called the residents not to drive in the area but also in some areas of neighboring Denmark.
Car traffic is not recommended around the city of Aarhus, the country's second largest city (east) where massive traffic jams have reached 30 kilometers. “The roads are causing major problems (…) many motorists have been stuck in queues for several hours,” the Danish police announced via Platform X. “So think twice and stay in your homes“, he advised the residents.

At Denmark, up to half a meter of snow fellsomething that has happened since 2011, according to the meteorological institute DMI.
At Norwayin the Sami lands of the far north, in Kautokino, the thermometer showed -41.6°C during the night. Schools remained closed in several municipalities in the south of the country due to transportation difficulties after the heavy snowfall of the last few days and some are expected to remain closed tomorrow.
Motorists in the area were called by the police not to take their cars and all train services between Oslo and Kristiansand (south) were also cancelled. In the Norwegian capital, the temperature is expected to drop to -25°C on Saturday.
At Finlanda new cold record was broken in Enontekio (northwest) where the thermometer showed -42.1°C.
