More than 50,000 people were forced to leave their homes within two weeks in Central Haiti, as gang violence spreads beyond the boundaries of the capital Port-O-Prenz, according to a statement from the International Migration Organization (IOM) on Tuesday. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere has been plagued for years by gang violence, accused of killing, rape, looting and ransom abductions, a situation that is getting worse. On March 31, gangs attacked cities in the central part of the country, especially in the D’A O and Mirbale, about 50 kilometers from Port-O-Prenz, where they conquered the police station and prison, releasing 529 detainees.
