Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi tonight presented his government’s new measures to support households and businesses. Responding to a question from APE-MPE, the Italian Prime Minister referred to the proposal to adopt a ceiling on the price of natural gas, at the European level.
In more detail, the Italian technocrat prime minister underlined: “As far as the price of natural gas is concerned, at the last Summit we managed to achieve a clear commitment from the European Commission to present a proposal at the October Summit. We will discuss it there. Another thing is to a proposal was presented and another thing happened: that is, this proposal never came up. We will have the proposal, we will discuss it and see what our positions are. By the way: those who argued that the ceiling on the price of natural gas could to provoke a negative reaction from Russia, that Moscow could reduce the supply of gas, they should be concerned. Because Russia, after all, cuts supplies and in addition imposes its own prices.
At the same time, Mario Draghi added: “Regarding the EU’s overall support to member countries to deal with this new economic crisis, the various funds have not yet been approved. Overall, however, there has been little coherence in the management of the problem. Now, the Council of Energy Ministers has approved a European energy saving plan, with which some problems are addressed in a unified way. There was a clear, good will on the part of Italy. We are, of course, in a more favorable position than other countries.”
The support measures adopted today by the Draghi government amount to 15 billion euros. “Our main goal is to help businesses and households facing financial problems,” stressed the head of the Italian government, who – after submitting his resignation – remains in place to deal with current affairs.
Mario Draghi did not hide his concern about the increase in inflation, the cost of living and the general geopolitical instability. “With these measures, we are helping Italians face the last months of the year with more peace of mind,” he said.
Mario Draghi and Ecological Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani underlined that Italy’s natural gas storage has reached 74% of the total potential and by winter it is expected to reach 90%.
