After parading at the San Siro stadium in Milan, Drag Race Italy once again focused on inclusiveness with a guest from the world of football, Ciro Immobile, accompanied by his wife Jessica Melena.
In the fourth episode of the third season (on Paramount+) the two guest judges made up for the absence of Paola Iezzi, who however sent the contestants a message of encouragement. Effervescent and maternal in a Queen of Hearts look, Priscilla followed the queens in the minichallenge together with Paolo Camilli and Chiara Francini joined them, with further support in the werk room during the challenge.
The minichallenge
(SPOILERS) With the cry of The Devil Wears Drag, the queens had 10 minutes for a quick drag transformation for an irreverent photobombing. From national monuments like the Tower of Pisa for La Sheeva (who mentioned Nehellenia with a fierce «Scatta!») to Italian icons like Sophia Loren (for Leila Yarn) and Donatella Versace (for Sissy Lea) or pop personalities like Cristiano Malgioglio ( for La Prada), the competitors have ridiculed every field of Made in Italy culture. Various film quotes: An American in Rome (for Melissa Bianchini), The sweet life (for Lina Galore), Roman holidays (for Sypario) e Eat, pray, love (for Morgana Cosmica). Silvana della Magliana tried her hand at Michelangelo’s David while Lighting Aurora with an iconic image of the ball with Fabio Cannavaro.
He deservedly won the RuPeter Badge Sypario, on the Vespa with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck with a laughable expression. However, my colleagues didn’t disappoint either, on the contrary it was a fun and light-hearted challenge.
The maxchallenge
The maxchallenge, on the other hand, is one of the most demanding of the program and concerns design, which usually sends into crisis those who do not have the practicality of a seamstress or a costume designer or those who have never picked up a hot glue gun. And indeed Silvana della Magliana who, as always at the beginning, was self-deprecating by calling herself “Rocco Tarocco”, then had a panic attack and cried in werk room during execution.
The queens, all in red, randomly picked their materials from a package with the name of a top model from the past or present, from Linda Evangelista to Gigi Hadid.
Chatting in the room, some differences between the Roman drag scene and the Milanese one were highlighted. According to La Sheeva «in Milan they put on pizzeria shows», while the real shows are seen in the capital. Parochialisms aside, more or less all the competitors delivered a decent result on the catwalk.
The Red Passion runway
La Sheeva wins hands down, who impressed with her jujubes and a true diva style: one of the most memorable fashion shows of the season so far. Sissy Lea also defended herself well in the jumpsuit, while the others achieved a result between discreet and passable, but without any particular horrors. To lighten the drama, however, Priscilla told Silvana della Magliana that she looks like “Aunt Ietta” (from the La Tata series, one of the pop comments that she gives hope for the future).
Perhaps the worst – but not according to the judges – was La Prada, with a parasol and a too basic tutu. In fact, the competitor was saved together with Sissy Lea, Silvana della Magliana and Leila Yarn.
The criticisms
Lina Galore is at the top, even if Chiara Francini applauds her for always the same cartoon make-up (which instead should be a reason, if not a demerit, at least a reason for monotony). Melissa Bianchini also took the podium, having not understood Paolo Camilli’s suggestion to be minimal but continuing to follow the logic of “more is more” and this time with better results than the Cupid bodysuit from the third episode. However, she deserves credit for having helped Silvana della Magliana, an act that was absolutely not to be taken for granted (in the meantime Could someone do a makeup tutorial on both the lovely La Prada and the pop Lina Galore? Thank you!). As already mentioned, La Sheeva wins 1000 euros. “You gave us a little bit of your heart,” Priscilla tells her and she’s right. Always scathing and tenacious, it’s good to see her vulnerable from time to time too.
Meanwhile, Sypario is saved by the lipsynch who does not spare Morgana Cosmica and Lighting Aurora. The latter is eliminated with a long, very long eulogy while the former endures yet another tirade about the comfort zone. She tolerates yes, but doesn’t suffer, on the contrary she responds in kind (an attitude that she never pays for and certainly doesn’t help to improve). On the notes of Tribal by Elodie Priscilla comments that this is a “lipsynch worth framing.” Despite her always very Pollyannesque approach, this time it must be said that – thanks to the rhythmic song – the two queens managed more than with dignity.
Spill the tea
The message of bringing drag art closer to the world of sport is a point in favor of the episode (even if Ciro Immobile involved the queens above all on a hormonal level, presenter included). The episode doesn’t have any major twists, it’s enjoyable and in some ways predictable, in a good way. Perhaps the jury discovered their cards too soon, but when disasters and missteps are avoided (see previous episode to believe) in the Italian version of Drag Race it is already a result not to be taken for granted.
