The draft final declaration of the peace summit on the war in Ukraine calls for the country’s territorial integrity to be respected, according to a copy of the document seen by Reuters on Saturday (15).
The final statement should be released on Sunday (16), during the last day of the conference at the Buergenstock resort, in central Switzerland. The draft is dated June 13th.
The Swiss government said it expects the summit’s final declaration to be unanimously supported by participants.
The document also calls for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to return to Ukrainian control and for Kiev’s access to Azov seaports to be restored.
More than 100 countries are taking part in the meeting, but China’s absence in particular has dampened hopes that the summit would leave Russia globally isolated, while recent military setbacks have put Kiev at a disadvantage.
The war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas also diverted the world’s attention from Ukraine.
Discussions are expected to focus on broader concerns triggered by the war, such as food and nuclear security, and a draft final declaration that identifies Russia as the aggressor, sources said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky considered the broad participation in the meeting a success and said the meeting’s agreements would be part of the peacemaking process.
“Ukraine never wanted this war. It is a criminal and absolutely unprovoked aggression on the part of Russia”, said the Ukrainian president alongside the Swiss president, Viola Amherd.
Amherd said the conflict had brought “unimaginable suffering” and violated international law.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz considered the meeting an important step. “Many peace and security issues will be discussed, but not the biggest ones. That was always the plan”, said the German politician, speaking to Welt TV.
“This is a small plant that needs to be watered, but of course also with the prospect that more can come out of it.”, added the German Chancellor.
Biden sent US Vice President Kamala Harris to represent him while Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will be represented by his foreign minister. India sent a lower-level delegation to the event. Beijing is sidelined after Russia was excluded from the process.
Harris announced more than $1.5 billion in energy and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, where infrastructure has been hit by Russian airstrikes since the 2022 invasion.
