DPU and MPF ask that União be sentenced to R$50 million for “disrupting Funai”

The Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU) and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) appealed to the Federal Court to order the Union to pay an indemnity of R$ 50 million arising from the “disintegration of the National Indian Foundation (Funai)” and the lack of protection of indigenous peoples in the Vale do Javari region, in Amazonas.

The two bodies ask that, in case of condemnation by the federal government, the funds be reverted to the benefit of isolated indigenous peoples and those of recent contact, through transfers to Funai, with the presentation of a project and schedule prepared by the indigenous body for its execution.

The request was made in a lawsuit filed by the MPF and the DPU that has been processed in the Federal Court since October 2018.

Sought, the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The conflicts in Vale do Javari have been monitored and denounced by institutions for years, even before the murders of indigenist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips.

This case had wide international repercussions, reinforcing criticism of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for leniency in combating illegal actions in indigenous lands.
