Donald Trump picks Senator JD Vance as vice presidential candidate

Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election, he announced on social media Monday (15).

“After much deliberation and reflection, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the most suitable person to assume the office of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the great state of Ohio,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Who is JD Vance?

Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, a newcomer to Congress, entered office with the help of the former president, whose support helped him win a contested 2022 election.

Vance criticized Trump in 2016, and six years later, Trump publicly humiliated Vance, even after endorsing him in the 2022 election.

Still, the senator is a fervent Trump supporter in Congress and often votes in line with the former president’s interests.

He opposed a Ukraine aid bill earlier this year, embracing Trump’s criticism of providing more aid. He is also close to Donald Trump Jr, the former president’s son.

When asked by Kaitlan Collins of CNN, whether he would hesitate to be Trump’s running mate given the former president’s treatment of Mike Pence, his vice president, Vance said he is “extremely skeptical that Mike Pence’s life was in danger” on Jan. 6, 2021, the day of the storming of the U.S. Capitol.
