A porpoise (a small species of dolphin) was found dead on Praia do Moçambique, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, on Thursday (27). Considered the smallest marine mammal, the porpoise is the animal in this category with the highest risk of extinction in the entire southern hemisphere.
The animal appeared dead still in the surf of the sea (part of the water where the waves break and make the water more foamy) and was pulled by fishermen to the sand.
The Center for Research, Rehabilitation and Depetrolization of Marine Animals (CePRAM / R3 Animal) was called to collect the animal’s carcass and informed that it will perform a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
The porpoise is a species of dolphin endemic to the South Atlantic. It can only be found in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Its most striking feature is its extremely long and thin face, with a bulbous forehead, reports R3 Animal, which monitors the beach where the dolphin was found.
“The porpoise is one of the smallest cetaceans, reaching up to 1.70 m, it usually lives in small groups of two to five animals and has a very discreet behavior, which makes it very difficult to be seen in the marine environment”, says the center.
“It occurs in coastal regions and feeds on fish, cephalopods and crustaceans. Animals with a maximum age of 17 years for males and 21 years for females have already been registered, but only a few individuals reach ages greater than 10 years”.
