Pope Francis died quickly on Monday morning after a stroke. He did not suffer and there was nothing that doctors could have done to save his life, said the chief of the pontiff’s medical team in interviews published on Thursday (24).
Sergio Alfieri, a doctor at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, supervised the Pope’s treatment during hospitalization to treat bilateral pneumonia earlier this year.
Alfieri said he received a call around 5:30 am on Monday morning to quickly go to the Vatican and arrived about 20 minutes later.
“I entered his room and he [Francisco] He had his eyes open, ”the doctor told Corriere Della Sera.“ I confirmed that there were no breathing problems. I tried to call him by name, but he didn’t answer me, ”he added.
“At that moment, I knew there was nothing more to do. He was in a coma,” added the doctor.
In another interview with La Repubblica, Alfieri stated that “he died without suffering and at home.”
In addition, he pointed out that some authorities with the Pope suggested immediately transferred him to the hospital.
“He would have died on the way. Making a tomography, we would have a more accurate diagnosis, but nothing more. It was one of those strokes that, in an hour, take you away,” he explained.
Francisco was 88 years old and almost died fighting pneumonia. Anyway, his death on the second took many people by surprise.
The day before, he appeared in St. Peter’s Square at the open -air Paparmobile to greet the crowd at a party on Easter Sunday, suggesting that he was improving.
Papa continued to work
After Francis returned to the Vatican after hospitalization on March 23, Alfieri and the other doctors recommended two months of rest to allow his body to recover.
However, Francisco, known for trying to the fullest, continued to work.
He found himself briefly with US Vice President Jd Vance on Easter Sunday and visited a prison in Rome on April 17, Holy Thursday.
Alfieri pointed out that the Pope heard the doctors’ advice and did not try too hard. “He [era] The Pope. Returning to work was part of his treatment and he was never exposed to dangers, ”the doctor told Corriere.
The doctor stressed that he last saw Francisco on Saturday afternoon. “He was very well,” he said, adding that he said he presented the Pope with a pie for a flavor that he knew the pontiff liked.
He said the Pope said, “I’m fine, I started working again and I’m enjoying it.”
“We knew he wanted to go home and be a Pope until the last moment. He didn’t disappoint us,” he concluded.
