Do you know what betaine is? Learn how to consume it and see the benefits

THE betaine It is a non-essential amino acid derived from choline (vitamin B8) and has gained prominence for its multiple health benefits. It plays important roles in the body, from cellular protection to regulating energy metabolism.

Betaine supplementation has also been explored to maximize its effects in specific cases. Learn below how to consume it and see the benefits it offers.

What is betaine?

According to Uerá do Couto, nutritionist at the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual (HSPE), “betaine is an amino acid, an active product of choline, found in relevant quantities in seafood, spinach, beetroot and wheat germ.”

The specialist explains that this amino acid acts as a cell protector, preventing cell dehydration and playing an essential role in the methionine cycle, an important substance in the metabolism of lipids and proteins.

Furthermore, it helps to reduce high levels of homocysteine in the body, which, in excess, can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

What is it for?

Betaine offers several health benefits. Couto highlights that “it is effective in treating hypochlorhydria, a condition characterized by low stomach acid production, and in promoting better digestion.”

It also helps combat the accumulation of fat in the liver, being useful for treating hepatic steatosis, and in controlling homocystinuria, a genetic disease that increases homocysteine levels in the blood.

“Betaine has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can help regulate energy metabolism, showing beneficial effects against diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and even some types of cancer,” says Renato Leça, nutritionist and professor at the ABC School of Medicine.

He also explains that, in the form of hydrochloride, this nutrient can be used to improve digestion by increasing the production of gastric acid, facilitating the breakdown and absorption of proteins.

Indications and contraindications

While betaine is a safe nutrient for most people, there are contraindications to consider.

According to the HSPE specialist, it should not be used by pregnant or lactating women or by those who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

“It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women because there are no studies, to date, proving the safety of using Betaine in this population,” he says.

“Betaine supplementation should be avoided in cases of severe liver disease or gastric and duodenal ulcers,” adds Leça.

When to consider supplementing?

Betaine supplementation may be indicated for people with digestive problems, such as hypochlorhydria, or to control conditions such as homocystinuria.

However, it is important to note that “the benefits for increasing muscle mass and physical performance are still inconclusive, according to recent studies”, concludes Couto.
