The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced a new version of the DisplayPort specification. It is backward compatible with the previous version of the interface standard for monitors and other displays – DisplayPort 2.0, but does not make it obsolete. VESA claims that DisplayPort 2.1 is more focused on reliability and USB4 compatibility, and every certified DisplayPort 2.0 device actually already complies with the new standard.
In this case, there is no need to talk about an increase in speed or throughput. One of the main goals of DisplayPort 2.1 is to improve the signal over the tunnel through the USB4 channel using the USB Type-C port. This includes improved signal transmission efficiency in addition to support for Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Panel Replay, which help reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to power the display.
Closer integration of USB4 and DisplayPort should make it easier to develop and implement these interfaces together, allowing the two technologies to be combined on more devices. USB-IF recently announced the USB4 Version 2.0 specification with support for the latest version of DisplayPort. This seems to fit perfectly with the VESA announcement.
In addition to this, VESA has also made some improvements to the DisplayPort cable specification to make it more reliable. DP40 cables supporting UHBR10 link speeds (up to 10Gbps) and up to 40Gbps total throughput can now be over two meters long, while DP80 cables supporting UHBR20 up to 80Gbps throughput can now be over one meter. This applies to both Full Size DisplayPort cables and Mini DisplayPort cables.
When it comes to buying new hardware to support DisplayPort 2.1, it’s definitely not something to worry about. If the device supports DisplayPort 2.0, then it is automatically ready to work with the new version. As for longer cables, new models should be available soon.
