Overcrowding and a lack of food, water, sanitation and basic hygiene are accelerating the spread of disease in Gaza, according to the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WHO director-general, more than 110,000 people have acute respiratory infections, another 70,000 have some level of diarrhea and thousands are plagued by other illnesses, including scabies, lice and skin infections.

Tedros called for a ceasefire and warned that current conditions in the Gaza Strip have increased the risk of disease outbreaks. He also reiterated earlier comments by WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris that more people could die from disease than from bombings if the health system is not restored.

“We need a ceasefire. NOW. It is a matter of life and death for civilians,” Tedros said.
